Brave Halfling Publishing identity program

A small, independent publisher of gaming materials. The directive from the client here was to retain the image of a halfling, as described by the collective works of J.R.R. Tolkein. I tried to avoid any obvious imagery of a sword-wielding, adventure seeking personality (as suggested by the name of the publisher), and desired to convey the image of what a halfling (hobbit) should be; a homely creature, best suited to a domesticated life-style. However, I still needed to suggest a certain ‘bravery’ and nobility to this fictional character. To that end, I desired to pay creative homage to a pair of portraits that can be seen within the Lord of the Rings movies by Peter Jackson. Seen over the hearth within the hobbit hole of Bilbo Baggins, can be seen a pair of portraits that are the parents of the itinerant hobbit. So, wanting to establish that a halfing (hobbit) is a halfling no matter his bravery, I created a simple portrait;

In this implementation, the central line art was contracted to a 3rd party illustrator, while I executed the typography and color application to the line art in Photoshop.

Having established this look-and-feel, I extrapolated an entire logo family;
